2006 Washington Wilderness Coalition Contest results

The Washington Wilderness Coalition (WWC) is pleased to announce the following winners of its recent Words for Wilderness prose and poetry contest:

Poetry

  • 1st Place - Drinking Bly's Martini Near Latah Creek by Paul Haeder, Spokane, WA
  • 2nd Place (tie) - Living in A Borrowed Packer's Tent by Matthew Campbell Roberts, Bellingham, WA
  • 2nd Place (tie) - Birding on the Nisqually by Daniel Gutierrez, Seattle, WA
  • 3rd Place - Up North by Elizabeth A. Kerlikowske, Kalamazoo, MI
  • Honorable Mention - Black Cottonwood in the Wenatchee River, Laura Snyder, Burien, WA
  • Honorable Mention - White Sands, Mummified Rodent, the Sky by Paul Haeder, Spokane, WA
  • Honorable Mention - Six Years Later by Michael Rust, Mount Vernon, WA

Prose

  • 1st Place - Re-Storying the World by Anita Sullivan, Eugene, OR
  • 2nd Place - Living Between Stafford and Wright, Fit and Timber, Two and Three by Derek Sheffield, Leavenworth, WA
  • 3rd Place - Hidden by Holly Hughes, WA
  • Honorable Mention - The Path of Sideways Trees by Karen Konrad, Dupont, WA

An awards event was held on Monday, July 17 at the Richard Hugo House in Seattle to recognize the winning writers and provide the opportunity for their work to be heard. The first-ever Words for Wilderness sought prose and poetry that came "from the heart of the wilderness and the writer." The winning entries should be available for viewing soon at the WWC web site.

The Washington Wilderness Coalition is the State's largest, environmental, grassroots organization dedicated to the vigorous defense of our remaining wild rivers and forests, including the proposed Wild Sky Wilderness.
