Published in November 2007, Cascade #1 is dedicated to former WPA president, Victory Lee Schouten. Member-submitted poems were guest-judged by Jeremy Gaulke, Tod Marshall, and Judith Roche. Rebecca Pirtle, John Burgess, and Michael Dylan Welch served as editors. Milo Duffin and Stephen Roxborough designed the cover. Thanks to all WPA members who submitted poems for consideration. Accepting submissions: March 15, 2008 - May 15, 2008 Comments from our guest judges:The poems collected here cut a wide swath, and the Cascades that are generally perceived as dividing the state into halves red and blue, desert and evergreen, are forgotten as anything but magnificent mountains. . . . The truth here might be that we are all telling the same human story in ways no one else can. (These) poems maintain a balance between imagery and rhetoric, figurations and summations, emotion and restraint . . . in the Northwest, we are blessed with distinct landscape and flora and fauna; our poets celebrate these blessings. It was a pleasure to experience the diversity exhibited. . . . I looked for intelligence and a deep engagement in the mysterious business of the cosmos . . . that is what poetry is 'about' - that participation through the medium of language in this vastly complicated and subtle cosmos we are part of.
